What is the riwaya of Hafs 'an 'Asim?

It is the transmission of the reading of 'Asim ibn Abi an-Najud through his student Hafs ibn Sulayman, belonging to the reading of Kufa. It is the riwaya used today across most of the Muslim world: Saudi Arabia, the Gulf, the Levant, Egypt, Turkey, South and Southeast Asia. If you learned the Quran without any particular riwaya being specified, it was almost certainly Hafs.

Why is the 15-line Madinah mushaf recommended for memorisation?

Because its layout is stable: 15 lines per page, every page beginning and ending on a complete verse, and the same 604 pages from one printing to the next. The mental image of the page therefore still works with any copy you buy later, and your revision landmarks stay in place. This is why most Quran schools require this layout.

Which size should I choose for memorisation?

The large size, around 17 × 24 cm, with a sewn binding. The type is wide, eye strain over a long session is far lower, and the mushaf opens flat. Pocket size is for travel, not for hifz; the medium 14 × 20 cm size is well suited to daily reading.

Do your Qurans include a translation?

No. The mushafs in this section are Arabic text only, with no translation and no transliteration. That is what readers of Arabic, those memorising, and students working with a teacher are looking for.

Should I get a colour-coded tajweed mushaf?

It helps if you are a beginner, or if you correct your recitation on your own between sessions with a teacher: the rules of ikhfa', idgham and madd are marked in colour. Two honest caveats: colour codes differ between publishers, and sooner or later you need to read a plain text. Many of our customers buy both.

How can I tell which riwaya a mushaf is in?

The riwaya is printed on the title page, at the foot of the page or inside the cartouche. We carry it over to every listing and check it on the physical copy before dispatch, along with the lines-per-page count and the exact size. If you are still unsure, write to us before ordering.
