Shafi'i Fiqh

From Safinat al-Naja, a few leaves a child memorises, to Minhaj al-Talibin commented on without interruption for seven centuries, this section brings together works of Shafi'i fiqh in Arabic, in their original editions, with the genre, level and vocalisation stated on every listing. It is the school followed in Egypt, the Levant, Yemen, East Africa and Southeast Asia, and the section follows the order in which its texts are studied.

Am I Shafi'i?

Most often this is settled by family origin. If your family comes from Egypt, the Levant, Yemen, Kurdistan, East Africa, Indonesia or Malaysia, it is very probably the school in which you heard the answers.

Which Shafi'i book should I start with?

With Safinat al-Naja, very short and vocalised in almost every edition, then with the matn of Abu Shuja together with its commentary Fath al-Qarib. That is the path followed in most institutes.

What is the matn of Abu Shuja?

It is a primer of about a hundred pages, also known as al-Ghaya wa al-Taqrib, covering the whole of Shafi'i law. It is almost always published with a commentary, and that is the form in which to buy it.

Fath al-Qarib or al-Iqna?

Fath al-Qarib by Ibn Qasim al-Ghazzi is the more accessible and suits a first reading of Abu Shuja. Al-Iqna by al-Shirbini is more developed and addresses a reader who has already been through the text once.

What is Minhaj al-Talibin?

It is the abridgement of Imam al-Nawawi, which became the reference of the school and has been commented on without interruption for seven centuries. It is the advanced text, and it is read only with a commentary.

Tuhfat al-Muhtaj or Nihayat al-Muhtaj?

These are the two great commentaries on the Minhaj, by Ibn Hajar al-Haytami and by al-Ramli. They differ on precise points, and the choice generally follows the tradition locally observed. An advanced reader learns to compare them.

What is Umdat al-Salik?

A short and complete manual covering the essentials of Shafi'i law in a manageable format. It serves as a practical reference rather than a curriculum text, and suits someone looking for a quick answer rather than a course of study.
