A fatwa is not a chapter of fiqh

A treatise sets out the rule and its reasoning, for every case of a given type. A fatwa answers one precise situation put by one precise person, with the circumstances of that situation. That is why a fatwa collection reads differently: you look for the case that resembles yours, and you read the answer together with its conditions.

A limit to know before buying

A fatwa answers a case with its circumstances, and the answer can change if the circumstances change. A collection is therefore an aid to understanding, not a list of solutions to apply mechanically to a situation that resembles it from a distance. The works on method here deal with exactly that point, and they are useful reading before using a collection.

What to check

The year of publication, decisive here. The arrangement: by theme, by scholar, or chronological, which entirely changes the use. The presence of indexes. And the scope, since some collections are devoted to a single field, finance or medicine.

Yes, by the collections devoted to life in a non-Muslim country: civil procedures, food, work, home loans, schooling. It is a distinct part, and not every collection covers it. Tell us your need and we will check the scope.

Why does the year of publication matter so much?

Because this shelf lives on new questions. A collection twenty years old knows neither today's means of payment nor certain medical procedures. We state the year on each product page, and it is the first criterion to look at here, before the author's name.
