Ar-Rahiq al-makhtum or As-Sira an-nabawiyya as-sahiha?

Ar-Rahiq al-makhtum if you want a continuous read: one volume, simple prose, clear chronology and maps of the expeditions. As-Sira an-nabawiyya as-sahiha by Akram al-Umari if you want to see how an author establishes his facts: two volumes, more methodical, more demanding in language.

Do these works replace Ibn Hisham?

No, they sift him. A contemporary author sets aside the weak reports and puts the whole in order, but you are then reading a selection and not the material. If you must cite a fact with its source, you have to go back to the classical sources. The two shelves are separate for that reason.

Are the maps really useful?

On the expeditions, yes, and greatly. A battle narrative without a plan stays a sequence of place names, and the logic of a movement or a siege becomes clear as soon as you see it drawn. We flag the presence of maps on the product page, and the Historical geography shelf gathers the atlases that complete a narrative.

What is Fiqh as-sira?

A genre rather than a single title: several authors have published under that name. The principle is not to recount the events but to draw out their lessons, stage by stage. That assumes you already know the narrative, so it is not the first book to take on this shelf.
