Who was Imam al-Suyuti?

Jalal al-Din Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Suyuti was an Egyptian scholar born on 1 Rajab 849 AH, corresponding to October 1445, in Cairo, where he died on 19 Jumada al-Ula 911, corresponding to 17 October 1505, at the age of sixty-one. Orphaned of his father at six, he memorised the Quran before the age of eight, began writing around seventeen, and left roughly six hundred titles in Quranic commentary, hadith, Shafi'i law, history and the Arabic language. He is the most prolific author in the Islamic tradition.

Is Tafsir al-Jalalayn entirely his work?

No. Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli had written the second half, from Surat al-Kahf to the end, together with the Fatiha, before he died in 864. Al-Suyuti composed the first half in the same style, and the work took the name of the two Jalals. It is the most concise commentary on the Quran, often printed in the margins of mushafs and adopted as the first tafsir in most curricula.

Why are some of his books so short?

Because a large share of his six hundred titles are epistles of ten to thirty pages devoted to a single question. They have been printed separately, each under its own cover, and are sold as books. This is not a publishing error; it is the nature of his work. The actual page count appears on every listing in our catalogue precisely so that you know, before ordering, whether you are buying a treatise or a booklet.

What is the connection between al-Suyuti and Sheikh al-Albani?

Al-Suyuti's al-Jami' al-Saghir, a collection of short hadiths arranged alphabetically, served as the basis for Sheikh al-Albani's grading work, which divided it into two books: the hadiths he retained as authentic on one side, those he set aside on the other. The two are sold separately and are meant to be consulted together.

Does one read al-Suyuti, or consult him?

Consult him, for the most part. His method is that of a compiler: he gathers and orders what others transmitted, without adding an opinion of his own. Al-Durr al-Manthur, al-Itqan and al-Jami' al-Saghir are research instruments. A few titles, by contrast, can be read from beginning to end, such as his history of the caliphs or his short epistles.

Which book should I start with?

With تاريخ الخلفاء, his history of the caliphs. A narrative text organised by reign, in a chronicler's language plainer than that of his technical treatises. The Jalalayn should come next, read verse by verse with the Quran open beside it, never alone.

Why did he withdraw from public life at forty?

After a career of teaching and official posts in Cairo, he chose to give up public office, decline the favours of the sultans, and devote himself entirely to writing in his house on the island of Rawda, on the Nile. A substantial part of his output dates from this period.

Do you ship multi-volume works outside Europe?

Yes, worldwide, with a tracking number. Sets are distributed within the parcel and each volume is braced individually to avoid pressure on the spines. Outside the European Union, any local customs duties remain payable by the recipient.
