Hadith Encyclopaedias

Hadith encyclopaedias and takhrij tools, in Arabic: the large compilations gathering the hadiths of dozens of collections into one work, the zawa'id repertories, word concordances and chain indexes. These are shelf purchases, ten to twenty volumes, opened to locate a hadith and trace it back to its source. Volume count, indexes and editor stated on every listing.

How do I find a hadith whose source I do not know?

With Al-Mu'jam al-mufahras li-alfaz al-hadith al-nabawi: it locates a hadith from any significant word, with the exact reference to collection, book and chapter. It is the basic takhrij tool.

What is a zawa'id collection?

One that keeps only what is additional to the six books. Al-Haythami's Majma' al-zawa'id gathers the additions of Ahmad's Musnad, al-Tabarani's three Mu'jam and others, with a judgement on each chain. If a hadith is not in the six books, that is where to look.

Are these still worth it next to online databases?

For a one-off search, a search engine often does, and it is fair to say so. For sustained work, no: these books give the complete chain, the compiler's judgement and the context of the chapter, three things a search result does not.

Do you sell complete sets?

Yes, and we state the volume count on every listing, since these collections are sometimes sold broken up elsewhere. Each volume is wrapped and packed in a rigid box. Write to us before ordering: we weigh the set and give the exact rate to your country.
