Works in Arabic on the purification of the soul and the ailments of the heart, the remembrance of death and the hereafter, invocations arranged by situation, and the rules of conduct. It holds pocket collections as well as treatises in several volumes.
Which book should I start with?
With a short work rather than a large treatise. A pocket collection of invocations for daily use, and an abridgement on the states of the heart for reading. The developed treatises come later, and read better once the vocabulary is in place.
What is the difference between a collection of invocations and a book of admonition?
The collection of invocations is a book of use: arranged by situation, consulted in seconds, it must fit in a pocket. The book of admonition is a book for reading, gone through in short sections, taken up again for years. Every listing states which type the work is.
Should I buy a treatise in several volumes?
Not first. A developed treatise on the stages of the inward path calls for time and a vocabulary already in place; bought too soon, it stays closed. It keeps all its value, but after an abridgement read to the end.
Are collections of invocations vocalised?
In most editions, yes, because they are made to be read aloud and often learnt. It is a more important criterion here than in any other section, along with format. The state of vocalisation is stated on every listing.
