What is the riwaya of Warsh 'an Nafi'?

It is the transmission of the reading of Nafi' al-Madani through his Egyptian student 'Uthman ibn Sa'id, known as Warsh. It is the dominant reading in Morocco, Algeria, parts of Tunisia and Libya, as well as Mauritania, Senegal, Mali and West Africa more broadly.

Can I recite Warsh from a Hafs mushaf?

No. The Quranic text is the same, but a number of words are neither written nor vowelled the same way, and not all the marks used are identical. To recite in Warsh you need a mushaf printed in Warsh.

Is there a Warsh equivalent of the 15-line Madinah mushaf?

There is no universal Warsh standard comparable to it. Pagination varies by edition. This is why, if you are memorising, you should pick one edition and stay with it: the visual memory of the page only transfers between copies of the same model. The lines-per-page figure is stated on every listing.

What is the difference between Maghrebi script and naskh?

Maghrebi editions often use a script close to khatt maghribi, with its own letter forms and conventions — familiar to anyone who studied in Morocco or Mauritania. Middle Eastern editions set Warsh in naskh, the script familiar to a reader trained on a Madinah mushaf. Neither is better: take the one your eye reads without effort. The script is stated on every listing.

Do you check the riwaya before dispatch?

Yes. Mixing up Warsh, Qaloun and Hafs is common among resellers. We check the title page of the physical copy before it ships, along with the script and the line count. If you have a doubt about a specific model, write to us before ordering.
