Who was Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah?

Taqi al-Din Ahmad Ibn Taymiyyah was a Hanbali jurist, theologian, exegete, and Damascus-based author born in Harran in 1263 and deceased in Damascus in 1328. His writings address creed, law, exegesis, hadith, reason and revelation, spirituality, and governance.

When and where was Ibn Taymiyyah born?

He was born on 10 Rabi al-Awwal 661 AH, corresponding to January 22, 1263, in Harran. His family fled the Mongol advance in 1269 and settled in Damascus, where he received his education and carried out most of his teaching.

Why is Ibn Taymiyyah called Shaykh al-Islam?

Shaykh al-Islam is an honorific used by many students, biographers, and readers to emphasize the breadth of his scholarship and influence. In this context it is not the name of one specific administrative office, nor a rank on which every school agreed.

Did Ibn Taymiyyah belong to the Hanbali school?

Yes. He was educated in a Hanbali family and Hanbali institutions and had a deep command of the legacy of Ahmad ibn Hanbal's school. He could nevertheless prefer another position when he believed that scripture, a legal principle, or the understanding of the earliest generations required it.

What role did Ibn Taymiyyah play against the Mongols?

During the invasions of Syria between 1299 and 1303, he joined delegations to the authorities, encouraged the defense of Damascus, and accompanied the Shaqhab campaign. He argued that the Ilkhanid rulers' declared conversion did not legitimize their attacks or political conduct.

Why was Ibn Taymiyyah imprisoned?

He experienced several periods of detention rather than one imprisonment for a single cause. His trials concerned the divine attributes, disputes with certain Sufi groups, his ruling on divorce oaths, and his position on journeys to graves and intercession. He died while confined in the Citadel of Damascus.

What are Ibn Taymiyyah's main books, and where should I begin?

Major titles include العقيدة الواسطية, العبودية, مقدمة في أصول التفسير, اقتضاء الصراط المستقيم, السياسة الشرعية, منهاج السنة, and درء تعارض العقل والنقل. For a first Arabic reading, العبودية or مقدمة في أصول التفسير are more approachable. مجموع الفتاوى is a reference compilation, not a textbook to read in sequence.

Are the Ibn Taymiyyah books sold by My Maktaba in Arabic?

Yes. My Maktaba exclusively sells new Arabic-language books. Each listing states the publisher, size, page or volume count, binding, and, when useful, the extent of vocalization. It also helps to check whether the edition is a standalone treatise, an excerpt, or a compilation.
