Thematic Hadith Collections

Collections of hadith arranged by theme, in Arabic: the ones read at home, studied in a halaqa and memorised. Riyad al-salihin for conduct, Bulugh al-maram and 'Umdat al-ahkam for rulings, Al-Adab al-mufrad for human relations, al-Nawawi's Forty to begin with. Every listing states the level, the vowelling and whether a commentary is included.

Which book for reading at home in the evening?

Riyad al-salihin by al-Nawawi, in a fully vowelled edition with large type and the sources under each hadith. Close to two thousand hadiths arranged by chapter, from sincerity to patience: the most widely read hadith book in Muslim homes.

How does it differ from a Sahih?

A Sahih is arranged on a jurist's logic and holds every route of a single hadith. A thematic collection keeps one hadith per point, files it under a clear heading and aims at immediate use. That is what makes it readable at home and teachable in an hour.

What should I start with for memorisation?

With al-Nawawi's Forty: forty-two hadiths summarising the foundations of the religion, memorisable in a few weeks, and commented on by Ibn Rajab in Jami' al-'ulum wa al-hikam. It is also the best text for teaching.

Do these collections give the grading of the hadiths?

Good editions do: they state under each hadith who reported it and its grading. It is an important criterion, because it keeps you from quoting a weak hadith unknowingly. We state it on every listing.
