What the Egyptian origin implies

In Egypt, the making varies a good deal from one publisher to another and from one printing to the next: thinner paper, sometimes uneven inking, glued bindings more frequent than in Lebanese or Saudi production. It is not an absolute rule, and several Egyptian houses take care over their printings.

The counterpart is price, often well below that of a Gulf edition of the same title, which allows a library to be built without an unreasonable budget. On a work you will open every week, look first at the binding and the paper stated on the listing.

Checking an edition before buying it

The number of volumes tells you the scale of the apparatus of notes. The presence of indexes and numbering decides its use in consultation. The paper and the binding decide the life of the book. And on texts meant for memorisation, vocalisation and the size of the characters come before all the rest.
