What is aqida?

Aqida is the part of Islamic knowledge that deals with belief, as opposed to fiqh, which deals with acts. It covers tawhid, the names and attributes, faith and its branches, divine decree, prophethood and the end of times. Its founding texts are short epistles, written to be memorised, around which a tradition of commentary took shape.

Which aqida book should I start with in Arabic?

With a short primer in a vocalised pocket edition, the Three Fundamentals or Lum'at al-I'tiqad for instance, together with its simplest commentary. Or with a contemporary manual written for teaching, if your Arabic is still fragile: those works set out the definitions before the argument and can be read without a teacher. Every listing in this section states the genre, theme and level.

Must the text be memorised before reading its commentary?

Not necessarily, but reading the primer attentively is required. A commentary follows the text line by line: without it in mind, the reading soon comes apart. Many commentaries reproduce the text in full, and the listing says so, which allows both to be read together.

Why does the same title exist at several thicknesses?

Because it is the same primer with different commentaries. A fifteen-page epistle can yield a commentary of a few dozen pages as well as a work of several volumes. These are not competing editions of one book, but different levels of reading. The listing states each time which text is commented on and by whom.

Are aqida books vocalised?

Primers meant for memorisation are, in most editions, and that is a selection criterion for a learning reader. Commentaries and source works rarely are in full. The state of vocalisation is stated on every listing in the section.

Do you sell aqida books translated into English?

No. The My Maktaba catalogue is entirely in Arabic, with no translations or bilingual editions. Descriptions, advice and customer service are in English, and every listing states the reading level expected.

Do you ship aqida books abroad?

Yes, worldwide, with a tracking number. Small-format epistles are braced within the parcel to prevent soft covers from warping, and multi-volume sets are distributed and held in place to avoid pressure on the spines. Outside the European Union, any local customs duties remain payable by the recipient.
