What is the point of studying mantiq?

To define, divide and conclude correctly. It is an instrumental science: the sciences that follow, usul al-fiqh first among them, borrow its vocabulary and procedures. Without these notions a chapter of usul is hard to follow.

Which text should I start with?

With al-Abhari's Isaghuji, very short, then al-Akhdari's Al-Sullam al-munawraq with a commentary. The Sullam is the most widespread text in institutes: a short poem, memorisable, and several accessible commentaries exist.

When should it be taken up?

After language. A logic matn is written in a dense register, with technical terms and compressed phrasing: without nahw and sarf you stumble on the sentence before you stumble on the idea. In the curricula that teach it, it comes after grammar and before the fundamentals.

What is adab al-bahth wa al-munazara?

The discipline that sets the rules of scholarly discussion: what counts as an admissible objection, who carries the burden of proof, how a disagreement is concluded. A short subject, immediately useful to anyone reading works of disputation or comparison between schools.

Do your editions include a commentary?

It depends on the title, and we state it on every listing: bare matn, matn with commentary, or commentary with gloss. To study, take a matn with a commentary; the bare matn is for memorisation once the text is understood.
