Checking an edition before buying it

The number of volumes first: it tells you the scale of the apparatus of notes. A text published in two volumes with one publisher and in five with another does not offer the same support. Then the presence of indexes and numbering, which decides its use in consultation. Then the paper and the binding, which decide the life of the book.

Finally, for texts meant for memorisation, vocalisation and the size of the characters matter more than all the rest.
