Who is Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal?

Ahmed ibn Mohammed ibn Hanbal al-Shaybani was a scholar born in Rabi' al-Awwal 164 of the Hijri calendar, corresponding to 780, in Baghdad, and who died in the same city on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal 241, corresponding to May 21, 855, at the age of seventy-seven. Orphaned by his father at the age of three, he began collecting hadith at around the age of fourteen, studied fiqh under al-Shafi'i, and became the fourth of the four imams of the Ahl al-Sunnah as well as the founder of the Hanbali school.

Why can't we find any books on fiqh written by him?

Because he was wary of putting legal opinions in writing and preferred to address each specific case individually. His positions were recorded by his students—notably his sons Abdallah and Salih—in collections called *Masa'il*. The Hanbali school was developed after his time, based on this material. If you wish to study this fiqh, you should therefore purchase a treatise written by a later Hanbali jurist along with its commentary.

What is the *Mousnad*, and how is it organized?

It is his collection of hadiths, one of the most extensive ever compiled, containing between twenty-seven and thirty thousand texts, depending on the edition. What sets it apart is its organization: not by topic, but by the Companion who narrated it. More than nine hundred Companions are listed in it, each with the complete collection of what they transmitted. Therefore, one cannot search for a specific topic in it, only for what is already known to have come from a particular person.

Which edition of the *Mousnad* should I buy?

An edition featuring critical notes and indexes. Given the classification by rapporteur, a subject index and an index of transmitters make all the difference between a practical reference tool and a series of volumes that are unusable. For this work more than any other, the quality of the edition matters more than the price: check the number of volumes and whether these indexes are included on the product page.

Which book by Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal should I read first?

*Al-Zuhd*, his collection of writings on detachment and simplicity. A single volume, brief texts, simple language, and universal themes. It can be read in fragments and offers insight into his unique voice without requiring the level of Arabic proficiency and the time commitment demanded by the *Mousnad*.

Why was Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal imprisoned?

The Abbasid authorities were then imposing an official position on a matter of faith concerning the divine word and demanding that scholars adhere to it. Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal refused to say anything other than what he believed to be true. He was arrested, interrogated, imprisoned, and then flogged—through several reigns—until a later caliph put an end to his ordeal and publicly declared him right.
