Usul al-fiqh and qawaid

The rules that produce the rules: usul al-fiqh, the sources, the general and the particular, abrogation, analogy, the conditions of juristic reasoning. And the qawa'id fiqhiyya, the maxims summing up hundreds of cases. Al-Waraqat by Al-Juwayni, Ar-Rawda by Ibn Qudama, Al-Mustasfa by Al-Ghazali, the collections of maxims.

Which text should I start with in usul?

Al-Waraqat by Al-Juwayni, only a few pages, but necessarily in a commented edition: the bare text is too concise to be understood alone. Follow with a contemporary manual divided into lessons, then Ar-Rawda by Ibn Qudama or its abridgement.

What is the difference between usul al-fiqh and qawa'id fiqhiyya?

The direction of the work. Usul starts from the text to produce a ruling: they are the tools of deduction. The qawa'id start from rulings already established to extract a maxim summing up hundreds of cases. They are studied together because they illuminate each other.

Is this shelf useful if I am not a student?

Yes, on one precise point: it explains the disagreements instead of listing them. Two jurists reading the same text and reaching two rulings are applying different principles. Whoever knows those principles stops seeing fiqh as a list of contradictory opinions.

Is Al-Mustasfa accessible?

Not as a first read. Al-Ghazali places an introduction on logic before entering the sources, and the vocabulary assumes training. It is a work of consultation for someone who has already worked through a manual. The level is stated on every product page here.
