Contact UsWho is Sheikh Mohammed Nasir ad-Din al-Albani?
Born on August 16, 1914, in Shkodër, Albania, and died on October 2, 1999, in Amman, Jordan, al-Albani was a Syrian scholar of Albanian origin who specialized in hadith and its related sciences. He arrived in Damascus as a child and was educated outside the formal school system through a program designed by his father; he worked as a watchmaker while conducting his research at the Zahiriyya Library. He taught the sciences of hadith at the Islamic University of Medina from 1381 to 1383 AH and received the King Faisal International Prize for Islamic Studies in 1999.
Why is al-Albani called a hadith scholar?
This is because the bulk of his work does not consist of writing treatises, but rather of examining the chains of transmission of the hadiths to establish their degree of authenticity. He traces each transmitter back through biographical dictionaries, compares the versions, and then justifies his judgment. This work, known as takhrij and tahqiq, is what earned him the King Faisal Prize in 1999.
Which book by Sheikh al-Albani should I read first?
صفة صلاة النبي, his description of the prophetic prayer, or صحيح الجامع الصغير وزيادته. The first is short and thematic; the second is organized into entries of a few lines with an index, which allows for reading in small doses. Both avoid the dense critical apparatus that makes his major series challenging for an intermediate reader.
What is the difference between *Sahih al-Jami'* and *Da'if al-Jami'*?
These are the two halves of the same work. *Sahih al-Jami’ al-Saghir* compiles the hadiths that al-Albani considers authentic from as-Suyuti’s collection, while *Da’if al-Jami’ al-Saghir* compiles those he rejects. The first volume makes no mention of what was rejected or why. For verification or teaching purposes, the two volumes complement each other and should be purchased together.
Why is the publication year of his books important?
Because al-Albani revised some of his own judgments over time, as he discovered new chains of transmission or revised his assessment of a transmitter. A hadith classified as weak in an older edition may be reclassified in a more recent edition. Two copies that appear identical may therefore differ in content: the product page for each book on our site lists the publisher and the year.
Are his books suitable for intermediate-level Arabic learners?
The text of the hadiths, yes: it is vocalized in most editions and is read in short units. The critical apparatus that accompanies it, on the other hand, employs technical vocabulary, the names of transmitters, and source abbreviations that require prior familiarity with the discipline. An intermediate reader will benefit from the collections without needing to consult all the notes, which is perfectly acceptable.
Where are the Arabic editions listed here printed?
From publishers in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, or from their distributors. The publisher, year of publication, and number of volumes are listed on each product page, as the author’s major series are available in several different editions.
