Names and Attributes

Works devoted to the names and attributes (الأسماء والصفات): Ibn Taymiyya's Al-Aqida al-hamawiyya and Al-Tadmuriyya, Ibn Uthaymin's Al-Qawa'id al-muthla, al-Bayhaqi's Al-Asma wa al-sifat, and al-Sa'di's commentary on the divine names. This is the most technical part of aqida: the level required is stated on every listing.

Which book should I start with?

With Al-Qawa'id al-muthla by Ibn Uthaymin: some sixty pages arranged as numbered rules, giving the method for reading the texts on the attributes. They make the rest of this section legible.

Can I start with the Tadmuriyya?

That is the classic mistake. The text is formidably dense and assumes the technical vocabulary is already in hand. Read Al-Qawa'id al-muthla first, then take up the Tadmuriyya with a commentary.

Why is this section separate from tawhid?

Because the names and attributes form a subject of their own by their vocabulary and by the scale of the historical disagreements attached to them. General tawhid works cover them in a chapter; this section gathers those devoted entirely to them.

Are the works on the ninety-nine names here?

Yes, and they are the most accessible part of this section: a register turned towards reflection rather than controversy, such as al-Sa'di's commentary on the divine names. The level is stated on every listing.
